SINOPSYS
Behind the Pain(t) is an approximately 75-minute stop-motion feature combining 3D puppet and shadow-puppet animation. This bittersweet black comedy follows three elderly immigrant women who embark on a heist to reclaim a treasure from the past—and find themselves confronting the traumas they buried in order to survive it. Nina fled the former USSR, Rose escaped Hungary, and Doris crossed out of East Germany. Each has built a new life in North America and has no desire to return to the country she left behind. When Rose’s antique shop accidentally loses a mysterious painting to a local museum, Nina insists they steal it back, refusing to reveal why it matters so deeply to her. As the three friends prepare for the heist, familiar smells, words, and half-forgotten habits keep dragging each woman toward a past she thought she’d left at the border—until the truth about the painting, and about Nina, finally comes out.
